The facts are that this seasons hay (2010) in the UK will be very scarce and the quality over the country will be poor.
- Hay should be cut at the end of May through June and finished by mid July.
- The main problem with August/September hay is the very restricted ‘window’ to cut and bale the product.
- Most pastures have taken far too much water this year; this will mean that when grass is mown the top of the grass will be bone dry whereas the bottom will be wet.
- If the crop is left on the field too long the tops will be dry and dusty, the bottom will be damp. When this is baled the hay will be prone to have inconsistent moisture content, which leads to spores, which will be inclined to make the end product dusty or mouldy or both.
- Once seeds hay have reached maturity and gone past the natural time to mow, the protein level drops away alarmingly so that the feed value dips to almost nothing.
Bearing in mind the cost of dealing with colic and the stress caused to the animal and owner, Canadian hay is a much safer option.
